I’m speaking at TechEd Australia 2012

I’m really looking forward to going back to Australia and especially to seeing everyone at TechEd Australia on the Gold Coast…well and my folks in Perth Smile

I have two sessions whilst I’m there, one I’m presenting with Garth Luke…who was the one that “duped” me into joining AvePoint two years ago at TechEd Australia after lots of beer and cigars and the second with Mark Rhodes…fellow MVP and great buddy of mine!

The session with Mark is brand new and we’ve been working hard to make it really info packed with content for IT Pros and Developers to take back to their workplace to help SharePoint environments stay healthy!

OSP223 - Presenting SharePoint as a Service to your Organisation

Thu 13 Sep 11:30-12:45

Garth Luke, Jeremy Thake

This session will discuss how to strike a successful balance between top-down control and trusting users to "do the right thing", resulting in a desired distributed management method that complies to policies agreed upon by the organisation’s governance committees. Topics such as accountability, restrictions, site lifecycle management, adoption, and return on investment of the service will be highlighted, as well as a review of available solutions to support delivery of SharePoint as a service. You’ll leave with a fresh understanding of:

• How organisations are presenting SharePoint as a service

• Several of the key services presented to business users

• Best practices for measuring adoption and return on investment

• Incorporating guidance for optimised information architecture

OSP225 - Real World: SharePoint Customisation – Developer vs. IT Pro

Thu 13 Sep 15:30 – 16:45

Jeremy Thake, Mark Rhodes

Find out what happens when Microsoft SharePoint MVPs stop being polite, and start getting real. Don’t miss Brisbane-based SharePoint MVP Mark Rhodes and New York-based SharePoint MVP & AvePoint Chief Architect Jeremy Thake face off on how to customise SharePoint in an enterprise environment from the perspective of an IT Pro and Developer, respectively. Mark and Jeremy will discuss the main issues that IT Pros and Developers have with regard to customisations, highlighting how the disconnect between the two camps hinders progress and makes daily tasks more difficult. The two SharePoint MVPs will also use real world examples to illustrate their pains and highlight tools and processes that have helped make their lives easier. SharePoint platform upgrade scenarios, patching, updates to developed solutions and much more will be covered in this session. Attendees will leave with a fresh understanding of how customisations typically occur in an enterprise SharePoint environment, as well as how tools and processes can be put in place to make both parties happy and provide a successful platform to the business.

How I collect information with delicious

One of the key parts of my role is collecting knowledge from Microsoft, MVPs and the community on technology and their opinions on it. This helps me to understand what’s going on in technology but also to see what pains they have that AvePoint products may be able to help. I often get quizzed by Product Managers on “is this an issue you commonly see” or “we’re thinking about this, would this be in high demand?”.

When I started sucking up all this information originally I used search engines to rediscover content I found. But often, I found myself not being able to find it because not finding the appropriate keywords or the keyword being too noisy now.

This is where delicious.com came in, I joined in September 2007 and now have bookmarked over 10,000 links. Why is this useful? Well, say I want to find out all the things I’ve bookmarked on “Apps” which is a keyword I use for the new App Model in SharePoint 2013. No probs…I can go to delicious and do a tag filter on “Apps”…or even faster build out a REST like URL http://www.delicious.com/jthake/apps.

Bookmarking

With delicious, I find their Bookmarklet is the quickest and easiest way to get a popup window where I tag things and add notes to the description field. Here is an example of how I tag and add notes…BTW download this from AC, it’s a great document!

image

Prioritizing

I do bookmark a lot, if I find EXCELLENT content, I will give it one extra tag which is “5star”, so in the “Apps” case I filter by two tags e.g. http://www.delicious.com/jthake/apps+5star.

Sharing

I get asked a lot for content on “X”. I usually just refer them to delicious with some tag filters:

- Where do I find new content on SharePoint 2013 development? no probs. http://www.delicious.com/jthake/development+%2523SharePoint2013

- I’m looking for more information on workflow and InfoPath…no probs http://www.delicious.com/jthake/infopath+workflow – try doing that with a search engine!

- I’m lokoing for more information on Content Query Web Part and custom XSLT examples…no probs http://www.delicious.com/jthake/cqwp+xslt

Twitter

You’ll notice also, I have a “Tweet” tag in the example screen shot above. Delicious has RSS as well as REST like HTTP pages. This means that I can use HootSuite to monitor my RSS feed for Tweets and autotweet to my @jthake account. I actually get a lot of retweets from posts I share…around the 500+ a month and clickthru traffic is HUGE on this which is a great way for others to discover the content I like!

Content coverage

No this system is dependent on me discovering it and bookmarking it. I get a good coverage as I do subscribe to key Microsoft Product Group blogs (25+), EVERY SharePoint MVPs blog (200+) and SharePoint community bloggers I’ve discovered over the years (ranked into 5 buckets of over 700+ blogs). This gives me a daily digest for me to keep up to date and gives me great coverage. I am constantly learning from this!

Other approaches

Other people do other things…like keep a giant Microsoft OneNote (love this product for collaborative meeting minutes and note taking). Some just stick with search engines Winking smile I’ve been using delicious this for years and it has SAVED me so many times.

Presenting: Always learning from others

I often get asked what resources I use to continually improve as a presenter. For those of you that have seen me speak over the years, I have evolved a lot as I’ve worked out what works for me and what doesn’t. I was very pleased with my first full keynote at SPTechCon Boston this year and also my 7 minutes on stage at TechEd Europe Keynote in front of 8000+ people.

One of the big ways I learn is by watching others. At conferences I always make an effort to sit and listen to others and observe their styles. When I say styles… I mean:

  • - the way they have prepared their slide deck from structure, to style, to timing
  • - the way they engage the audience
  • - the way they work the room
  • - the way they express themselves
  • - if they use any props or ‘gimmicks’…think Dux’s bowtie, my sports jackets,…
  • - the way they wrap it up and call to actions
  • - the way they handle Q&A at end and throughout the presentation

Some of my favorite SharePoint community speakers are: Andrew Connell, Ted Pattison, Ben Curry, Rob Bogue, Todd Klindt, Todd Bleeker, Richard Harbridge, Dux Raymond Sy, Steve Fox, Susan Hanley, Chris McNulty, Mark Rhodes…

image

TechCrunch also recently posted the top 20 watched TED videos. I highly recommend watching Sir Ken Robinson’s one as he mixes in great humor, timing and ties it altogether in a very important message.
Steve Jobs is one of my heros in the public speaking world, and even the one on this list where he reads straight from a script and isn’t his usual prepared self showed me how powerful a good script can be. If you don’t get emotional in that one…well then it’s probably just me…but I bet you do. What that man did for this decade will never be forgotten.

One of my personal goals is to present on TED one day, watch this space!

slide:ology: The Art and Science of Creating Great Presentations

One thing that I think makes a huge difference is having slides right. If you follow some simple principals it will make your presentation so much better for lots of reasons. Less is more! This book dose a great job of explaining it, called slide:0logy.
