A Collaborative Platform
I was reading posts on SharePoint Meets ECM sessions and was interested with the comments around "that MOSS is a very strong collaborative platform but isn’t yet a full-fledged alternative to existing ECM tools" which is true I guess. I mean, the Document Management and Web Content Management is very capable but if put up against OpenText DM or RedDot CMS they just aren't as polished.
Complement existing ECM
"MOSS shouldn’t be considered a competitor to existing ECM systems" - this is also very true, as I've said before in the past...MOSS can sit on top of existing Document Management and Records Management systems such as OpenText, Tower and Interwoven. And most vendors are using SharePoint to leverage it's products in a more collaborative way e.g. TIPS (by UniqueWorld which was purchased by Tower and rewritten for MOSS).
Records Management
It was good to see they tackled the really nasty areas such as Records Management:
"Challenge #1 is whether MOSS can be considered the one and only system of record. My answer: Not in all but the most straightforward implementations until the DoD tools are available and a body of best practice has been developed around SharePoint RM. Doculabs seemed to concur with this point."
And I don't think the DoD tools are going to come anywhere near close to match European and Asia Pacific standards either after talking to some Records Managers here in Perth. So it's even earlier days for everywhere outside of US.
Recently also, Livelink ECM - eDOCS RM (what a mouthful!) has been certified with U.S. Department of the Defense 5015.2-STD.
Governance
There was an interesting question around "who pays for MOSS and who manages MOSS (departments vs. IT" which I've not come across in our dealings with clients thus far. Most organisations I've dealt with are buying it as an Enterprise wide platform as apposed to a Department specific solution and therefore IT takes the reigns.
Document Imaging
There was also an interesting piece on Kofax and Fujitsu's integration with MOSS. This will be interesting to see how well this integrates and scales with MOSS. Also, how it is going to fit with the Records Center also.
