Solution Development in SharePoint 2007

This series was inspired by the chatter amongst SharePoint blogs on the best ways to approach customisations in SharePoint using Solutions.

What PDA phone? Decisions Decisions

Well, I still haven't got my new phone and even though Optus have the 02 XDA Atom in store, it's not on the Insurance list! So my choices are limited and I'm getting really impatient with a pen and paper notepad and a Nokia 8210!
I can go the Blackberry route with a 8700g, which would be fine if it had not lacked a external storage slot and capability to play mpgs and mp3s. I'm not worried about it not having a camera, nothing out there has a camera worth boasting about anyway!
I can go the Sony Ericsson route with a 910i, which would be fine if it wasn't the size of a brick (yes bigger than my old 02 XDA IIs) and didn't have an annoying flip down keyboard that will break easily in my pocket and also not use Symbian.
The others that I didn't even consider are Nokia's 9300 and 9500 because they look like they were the first mobiles ever invented.

I'm really after a PDA that:
  • has a calendar, todo and notes ability that syncs with PC
  • isn't the size of a briefcase
  • can be used as a multimedia player (mp3, mpg)
  • has external storage (preferably SD)
  • has a touch screen and no keyboard
  • preferably uses Windows Mobile 5.0 over Symbian and Blackberry
I'm still waiting for the 02 XDA Atom preferably. But the new Sony Ericsson P990i is pretty impressive too. Apart from that there doesn't seem anything else out there that meets these requirements yet.
The search continues and my patience wears thing as I ring Optus Insurance every week and get promised "it'll be here in 2 weeks."!

Joined Digg

I've been using Digg [TechCrunch][Sourcelabs] for a while now, it's a great way to find out what's new and interesting out there and is an alternative to having lots of RSSs agregated in Google Reader or the like.

I like the fact when you register it has the "recommend a friend" option where you can virally promote the service to your IT buddies. I will definately add this feature on my pet site as it's a great way to get the word around, especially in a sports based arena with team mates.

It would be nice if they did something similar to google reader and allow you to publish your 'dugg' sites on your own site. You can view what I've dugg here and it actually allows you to view by category as well.
Actually, with the RSS feed, you could do this feature with a bit of work although the RSS is for all your dugg's rather than being able to dig down into each category.

You can even have links to allow people to digg your articles too by just simply adding a link.
Also, in the profile section, they don't have skype as a IM client which is a bit odd!

The Digg spy page is pretty impressive with realtime action of what's going on!

Technology to get the point across

I can't believe how moving this flash map could be on the fatalities of the armies across the world in Iraq. This must have taken a fair bit of time to put together, but it's effect is so astounding. Every day something appears to flash on the map!
Reading through the comments is also quite shocking, with the death toll for US presidents showing that both the Bush's are up there, but Regan's reign takes the top shot.
I hate war, I don't think it's the answer...I don't have the answer, but there must be an more mature way of dealing with these things!

ATLAS - Virtual Earth Mashup

Jonathen Hawk has published a great article on ATLAS and creating a mashup with Virtual Earth. I really can't wait to get my hands dirty with ATLAS and get it into my pet site to benefit the community and hopefully pump up some promotion of the site!
Australia is still not mapped on VirtualEarth except a few main suburb names, GoogleMaps only has an outline! The USA/UK is mapped on both. VirtualEarth also has some of Europe mapped too.

For sale: FujiFilm S2 Pro Digital SLR

I'm going to sell my FujiFilm S2 Pro [1] camera as I don't use it anymore and hardly have since moving to Australia because I haven't been running my photo booths at sports events etc.

On Ebay they are maknig about AUD $750 for the body. I've got 2 1Gb Microdrives, a 70-200mm Nikon lens and a 20-70mm Sigma lens, it's all in a nice backpack specialist bag with 3 sets of rechargeable batteries.

If you know anyone who may be interested please let me know.

For sale: Apple 17" Powerbook 1.33Ghz

I've also got a Apple 17" Powerbook which I haven't used in about a year since getting a Windows machine primarily for development work and moving over to all Internet based applications for calendaring, email etc. and not relying on the OS for anything but Microsoft SQL Server and Microsoft Visual Studio for development purposes.
This machine is very very sexy and has a great slim case witha shoulder strap with it.
EBay has them up for about $1200. Again, if anyone is interested let me know.

M$ Web Content Management

Just seen that Andrew Connell is going to be doing a web cast on M$ new CMS on 18th April (public holiday in Aus!). Sounds like there is a lot of interest about the CMS as well as Sharepoint 2007. Andrew mentioned that Ryan Rogers also noticed the interest.
The Sharepoint bloggers have been busy also.

I believe it when I see it, but so far the features they are talking about are very impressive.

Web 2.0 awards

Found a great site on this blog, it's got a really nice design but more importantly lists the best web2.0 sites out there. Hadn't even heard of some of the ones that had won such as NewsVine. The blog is very good on the site aswell.

M$: XAML/ .Net / ATLAS

Just found Tim Anderson's blog whilst hunting around for XAML information. Interestingly, M$ are looking at a cross platform solution for XAML, which is a good step forward for M$...they are going that way with all their LIVE products being less dependent on M$ OS...it will be interesting to see how compatible these are in different browsers on different platforms. This blog article also mentions the .Net Framework cross platform development called ROTOR , quoted as for academic use only and with the MONO product slowly gaining respect out there aswell, these things could see the light of production servers.
Also bumped into David Boschman's blog discussing his thoughts from MIX06 with respect to ATLAS and also what he'd heard whilst he was there. He points to a demo by Brad Abrams that demos ATLAS. Ricksp also has a good article on design patterns for ATLAS which is definately worth a read.
